Travel Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

Currency of Vietnam

The official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Because the dong is tied to the US dollar, you can use your money at most hotels and big shops. To make things easier, prices are often quoted in US Dollars in tourist areas.

However, since Cambodia does not use US coinage, any change you get that is less than one dollar will be in riel. … Visa prices are charged in US dollars, however, and the exchange rate if you are using local currency is often very unfavorable.

Tipping

Generally, tipping is not expected in Vietnam, but is very much appreciated. Many Vietnam workers do not earn much money and always appreciate the extra money to be made in tips. The official currency in Vietnam is the Vietnam dong (d). However, United States dollars are also accepted in most places.

Credit Cards

Visa, Master Card, JBC and American Express are the most common credit cards honored in Vietnam. You can use ATMs to get cash advances on your credit cards; in a pinch, you can visit Vietcombank to get an advance over the counter.

Electricity

Electricity in Vietnam. In Vietnam the power plugs and sockets are of type A, C and D. The standard voltage is 110 / 220 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

CLOTHES

Do not over-pack on clothes, take a small amount and buy what you need after you arrive. Clothes are cheap in Vietnam. The Vietnamese dress very conservatively. Women and men wear long pants and short or long sleeve tops for the most part and visitors should do the same despite the heat.

Medicine

If you‘re taking prescription medication into Vietnamcarry it in your hand-luggage with a copy of the prescription. … Some specific medicines can be hard to find inVietnam and many medications on sale are counterfeit. Vietnam has restrictions onmedicines which it classifies as “addictive” or “psychotropic” medicine.

Climate

Vietnam. Vietnam`s Climate can be divided a tropical and a temperate zone. It is characterized by strong monsoon influences, has a considerable amount of sun, a high rate of rainfall, and high humidity that makes it sometimes feel quite uncomfortable.

Cambodia has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. There are two seasons in Cambodia. The northeast monsoon season runs from December through April, bringing sunny, dry weather especially in January and February.

Laos has a tropical monsoon climate, with a pronounced rainy season from May through October, a cool dry season from November through February, and a hot dry season in March and April. Generally, monsoons occur at the same time across the country, although that time may vary significantly from one year to the next.

Trains & Buses

We recommend taking a train when this option is available and doesn’t take much extra time compared to the bus. Trains in Vietnam are safer than buses and offer quite a good standard with extras like on-board catering, charging points and clean toilets.

For certain routes, train rides take much longer than buses, or require extra transport to and from the railway station from the city center. In this case, taking the bus will save you time and the hassle of arranging transport from and to the railway station.

Luckily, most buses in Vietnam offer a good standard and many people can sleep well in these buses. You can adjust the seats downwards and you have extended leg space. For tall people this extended leg space is not enough, so if this is you, you will have to raise your knees to find a good sleeping position.

Water in Vietnam

In Vietnam, avoid tap water as much as possible and only drink bottled water. Generally, even locals will avoid tap water and will drink boiled or filtered water at home. Bottled water is almost always available at any local restaurants and hotels.

Mobile Phones

Buying a SIM card in Vietnam. To avoid roaming charges, it is possible to buy a local SIM card in Vietnam. … The three largest Vietnamese phone providers – Viettel, MobiFone and Vinaphone – account for 90% of Vietnam’s mobile phones and have booths at the Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi airports.

Enjoy the best possible vacation for your family
