PIESTANY
Piešťany is located in the western part of the country within the Trnava Region and is the seat of its own district.
It is the biggest and best known spa town in Slovakia.
The spa specializes in treatment of chronic rheumatic and arthritic diseases and post-accident lesions of joints and bones.
The spa is located on the Spa Island between two branches of the Váh river, at the site of several hot springs with temperatures of 67–69 °C (153–156 °F).
The water originates in a tectonic break at 2,000 meters depth. The sulfate–carbonatewater from the springs is used in pools and tubs. Sulfurous mud extracted from the bed of a side channel of the river is also used for treatment in the form of thermal mud pools with temperature 39 °C (102 °F) and for partial and full body packs. Spring water and mud therapy is complemented by electrotherapy, exercise, massage, medication, and diet.
The spa is operated by the Slovenské Liecebné Kúpele company that was purchased by Danubius Hotels Group in 2002, with a small share of ownership belonging to the town’s municipality.

Treatment procedures in Piešťany:
After arrival to a sanatorium, a doctor-balneologist will meet you to clarify the history of the disease, listen to your complaints and assign treatment. If necessary, your doctor may prescribe additional examinations and/or laboratory tests.
For complex locomotorium diseases, a special diagnostics is carried out. It is done in order to verify muscle tone, degree of neurological, motor disorders, and a condition of spine.

Mud therapy: From the medical point of view, sulfuric mud of Piešťany is one of the highest quality mud in the world. Mud therapy in Piešťany includes mud wraps and mud pool. Mud wraps are common applications. A mud layer of up to 5cm is applied to a whole body (except for the head, neck, heart and local applications that are held locally) by hand or with a special hose. Mud pool is a reservoir, filled with silt sulfide mud thickness of 30 cm. Above the mud, there is a layer of thermal water with the thickness of about 50-90cm and temperature of 40°C. Heat of the thermal water and mud dilates blood vessels, relaxes muscles, lowers blood pressure. The water and mud minerals are absorbed into the skin. It is necessary to stay in the pool for 10 minutes. You can sit, stand or walk slowly from side to side during this procedure. After the procedure, a dry wrap for 15-20 minutes must be done obligatorily.
Natural gas treatment: Natural gas used for gas injections and dry carbon dioxide baths, improves circulation, stabilizes blood pressure and has analgesic effects.

Water therapy: Thermal baths and thermal pools use middle acidic-hydrogen-carbon, calcium, sodium, sulfuric water and give the greatest therapeutic effect. The water`s natural temperature is about 67-69°C. Since the thermal water of Piešťany contains sulfates, sulfites, sulfides, it has very positive effect on musculoskeletal system. As a treatment, thermal baths are offered by all sanatoriums in Piestany. A pool with 100% natural thermal water is located in «Irma» Spa Center. In addition, among other major water procedures there are pearl baths, underwater massage, sulfur baths, carbonic baths. Also, an important component of this type of treatment is drinking rate of thermal mineral water. It has a positive effect on gastrointestinal tract, kidney flushes and cleans intestines.
