BUDAPEST

Margaret

Island
is a 1.6 miles long island in the middle of the Danube
river, in central Budapest, Hungary. The island is mostly covered by landscaped
parks, and is a popular recreational area. Its medieval ruins are the reminders
of its importance in the Middle Ages as a religious center. The island spans
the area between the Margaret Bridge (south) and the Árpád Bridge (north).
Before the 14th century, the island was called Insula leporum (Island of
Rabbits). Today’s appearance has been developed through the connection of three
separate islands, the Festő (Painter), the Fürdő (Bath) and the Nyulak
(Rabbits), during the end of the 19th century, to control the flow of the
Danube river. Originally, the island was located at 102.5 meters above sea
level, but now it has been built up to 104.85 meters above sea level to control
possible flooding.

The thermal water on Margaret Island, known for its healing powers, was first brought to the surface in 1886. The 70°C/170°F warm, mineral rich, the natural water comes from the Sigmund spring (Zsigmond forrás) that rises from the deep beneath the island. The water, rich in sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, hydro-carbonate and sulfate exerts its healing effects both, as the thermal water in the spa’s pools & baths and as drinking water.

A Green Gem of Budapest.

In late spring, the green meadow of the Margaret Island provides a peaceful hideaway from hectic Budapest downtown with large green areas, flowery gardens, old trees, and lots of entertainment. The island’s attractions include:

– Romantic walkways,

– Medieval ruins, a small zoo,

– Rose garden

– Two musical fountains,

– Historic water tower,

– Swimming pools,

– Water park,

– Playgrounds,

– Open air theater and cinema, and some
great clubs.

Budapest is the only capital in the world with healing water flowing beneath its grounds.

When it comes to per capita thermal water on the planet, Hungary ranks second after Iceland with its medical waters ranging from 21 °C and 76 °C.

Six of Budapest’s eleven thermal-heated baths have a history dating back to hundreds of years, keeping spa traditions alive in the city.

Budapest is considered one of the richest for its thermal waters and healing of cities in the world. Some of the hot springs on the Buda side of the city has been used by the Celts and Romans yet. The name Aquincum, which means “rich water”, also applies to the sources. Archaeological sources supporting the work of 14 baths.

Budapest warm waters, in their origin, are karst . Thanks to special geological conditions, thermal water, rising from the deeper layers of the earth, are mixed with the karst waters.

On the territory of Budapest, at the spurs of the Buda Hills, the Danube along parallel fault lines on the surface there are thermal springs, which have a different composition and temperature
of the water. Sources beating at the foot of the Rozhadomb hill, supplying thermal baths “Lukacs” and “Király”, sources of Gellert
Hill are supplying the “Rudas” and “Gellert” baths.
The capital of Hungary has famous healing waters. Under Budapest, there is literally the lapping thermal sea. There are more than a hundred thermal springs hit from the city’s grounds, rich in salts and minerals beneficial to human health.

Sárvár is one of the most popular balneological resorts in Hungary, its main specialization is the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and rehabilitation after injuries, fractures and orthopedic surgeries. The resort also effectively treats neurological disorders, respiratory tract diseases, chronic gynecological diseases and some forms of female infertility.
