TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1. Arrival to San Jose, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is all about nature.  You can feel it in the purity of the air the moment you land in this tropical country. Right after you go through immigration and customs one of our representatives will meet you at the airport exit to load the luggage into the vehicle and transfer you to the hotel. The hotel for tonight is close to San Jose city, just 15 minutes away from the airport.

During the short drive, you will receive a brief introduction to Costa Rica and some recommendations for your trip. The guide will explain your itinerary in detail once you are in the hotel.

Tonight, you can have dinner and explore a lively and cultural city.  San Jose offers a variety of dining options and different cultural experiences such as theaters and public plazas in the downtown area.

Day 2. White Water Rafting at Pacuare River. Transportation to Arenal

Adventure is waiting for you! The day begins early. Our representatives will pick you up and take you to the area of Siquirres on the Caribbean slopes. Once you get to Siquirres, a delicious typical breakfast will be waiting for you.  Here, you will taste the famous “Gallo Pinto”, this is truly the best breakfast for a day full of activity.

After breakfast, you will change clothes and get ready to jump into the river, which is only few minutes away. Upon arrival to the river, the expert guides will proceed with the safety talk, technical instructions, and you will have the chance to practice paddling on calm water. From there you will explore the stunning river rapids and enjoy the majestic scenery among you. Once half of the river is conquered, we will have lunch on the banks of the river to recharge our energy for the last part of this water adventure. This is the best white-water rafting in Costa Rica, and this is considered top 10 rivers in the world to practice this sport. This is a class III-IV.

NOTE – MINIMUM AGE: The minimum age of this white-water rafting is 12 years old, if you are traveling with younger children, we have to change the river for this activity.

After this amazing trip you will continue traveling northwest, to the northern plains of the country where the stunning Arenal Volcano will welcome you. The Arenal Volcano was discovered after the full force unleash of the volcanic explosion in July of 1968.  Since then, it has also erupted in 1975, 1993 and 1998 for several years but is currently inactive.

You will arrive by late afternoon to the hotel in Arenal and the rest of the day will be free to rest and enjoy the hotel facilities.

Day 3. Canyoning, Nature Walk And Hot Springs.

This morning you will enjoy an exciting rappelling tour on the Lost Canyon Waterfalls, this new sport has been called Canyoning. A comfortable motor coach will take us to the entrance of a stone path and then we will ride the “forest limousine” up the mountain for about 15 minutes until we reach the center of operations. Here the safety briefing will take place, you will get your equipment on and start the adventure. You’ll be rappelling down huge waterfalls, jumping into pools of slow-moving water, zipping your way down on guided rappels, river tracing along the canyon, rappelling the canyon walls and river boulders and hiking up through the rainforest. We pack all kinds of adventure into the best canyoning experience. A delicious lunch is included after this adventure and then you will be transferred back to your hotel.

In the afternoon, you enjoy more of the rainforest and relax in the natural hot springs near the volcano. We start with a nature walk in the Arenal Volcano National Park where an expert guide will explain interesting facts about the volcano and its history.  There are many chances to see wildlife on the hike and, of course, experience the volcano activity first hand. The trail is easy and your guide will help with spotting and pointing out wildlife as you walk.

Finally, we will take you to the relaxing thermal waters near the volcano where you can swim and relax in these naturally heated hot springs. Dinner is included at the hot springs restaurant so you can enjoy more time here.

Day 4. Transfer Arenal Volcano to Monteverde. Horseback riding in the cloud forest.

Today you will travel to the inspiring Cloud Forest in a particularly unique way.  We will take you on the Van-Boat-Van across the Arenal Lake to get to Monteverde. You can enjoy spectacular views of the Volcano and find different species of birds while you navigate through the tranquil lake.

Monteverde has one of the most important protected cloud forests found in the world.  There are just a few of these forests therefore it is very important to conserve and protect the unique plants and animals found around.

By mid-afternoon, we will take you to a private property where you will ride gentle horses through the cloud forest. The tour pass through coffee plantations, sugar cane, continues through dirt roads, trails, and some small rivers while we enjoy spectacular views of the Gulf of Nicoya.

Day 5. Zip Line Tour in Monteverde.

Today you will enjoy one of the most popular and highly rated activities in Costa Rica, the zip line or Canopy Tour as it is called locally. It consists of zip lining by means of cables between trees and mountains while you are wearing a special harness designed for the tour. While you “fly” through the dense cloud forest you can see and feel all the natural activity that is occurring within the treetops, such as, birds, insects and some mammals. Don’t forget your camera so you can capture the amazing views of the Cloud Forest.

The afternoon is free to enjoy the hotel facilities or take one of the optional tours in the area.  Walking around the village of Santa Elena is also a great opportunity to interact with locals.

Day 6. Transfer Monteverde to Samara Beach.

Today, after breakfast we will take you to the North Pacific area of Costa Rica. The first thing you will notice is the change of vegetation and temperature as you get to the beach.  Additionally, there are more people enjoining the activity of this beach town. You will arrive early so you have the entire afternoon to enjoy the beach and even admire the sunset by the end of the day.

The beautiful and lively Samara Beach is the perfect place to finish this adventure- filled trip.  Here you will find a beautiful beach with small waves surrounded by the tropical rainforest. You will stay at a comfortable beach hotel with the facilities you need for a pleasant stay.

Day 7. Samara beach: Ocean Kayaking or surf lessons.

For today, you can choose one of the following adventures:

a)           Ocean kayaking and snorkeling near Chora Island. You will start paddling from Samara Beach and continue across the bay to a deserted white sand beach on Chora Island.  This island is a refreshing escape to an underwater world. You are free to snorkel with tropical fish, splash and swim in clear waters, or simply sit and absorb the golden rays of the sun.

b)           Samara is the perfect beach to learn how to surf or to improve your surfing skills. The ocean has little to no rip currents and the waves are small to medium size, which is perfect for practicing your technique. Your guides have been surfing since almost before they could walk and they will show you all the tricks and techniques.

You will return to the hotel after any of these adventures and the rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the beach and hotel facilities.

Day 8. Transfer Samara Beach to San Jose.

Today you travel back to civilization, our representatives will take you to San Jose city for the last night in the country. The transportation unit will pick you up after breakfast at your hotel.

The hotel for tonight is located in San Jose.  This afternoon you can explore the city and visit museums or historical buildings. The central avenue is a place where you can interact with locals and learn a little about our way of living.

Day 9. Departure Costa Rica.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1. Arrival to San Jose, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is all about nature, you can feel it in the purity of air the moment you land in this tropical country. Right after immigration and customs, one of our representatives will meet you at the airport exit.  He will help you with the luggage and take you to the hotel that is arranged for you. Lodging for tonight is in downtown San Jose, close to plazas, museums and many dining alternatives.

During the drive, you will receive a brief introduction to Costa Rica and some recommendations for your trip. The guide will explain your itinerary in detail once you are at the hotel. Tonight you can go out for dinner and explore a lively, cultural city.

Day 2. Transfer San Jose to Tortuguero National Park.

The best natural expedition awaits you today. Your expert guide will meet you early at the hotel. From San Jose you will start traveling northeast to the Caribbean lowlands. You will stop for breakfast at a local restaurant in Guapiles town, this will be your first contact with Costa Rican cuisine. After breakfast you will continue to La Pavona dock, there you will board the special boat that will take us to our hotel located in the Tortuguero National Park area.

This afternoon you will visit the Village of Tortuguero where you will visit the Turtle Museum and walk around town to learn about the relaxed way of life in the Caribbean of Costa Rica. Your guide will explain to you how this village developed and why they changed their mentality about the turtle conservation. You will return to the hotel after this interesting visit.

Day 3. Tortuguero National Park exploration.

This morning, after breakfast, you have a boat tour on the Tortuguero National Park with the company of a local nature guide. The small boats go deep into the canals of the national park, further beyond where other boats can go.  Due to the ability to explore further into the canals, you will have the opportunity to find rarer species of wildlife. The extensive network of freshwater creeks and lagoons behind the beaches of Tortuguero are home to seven species of river turtles, spectacled Caiman, southern River Otters, a number of crustaceans, and over 50 species of freshwater fish. On this expedition you are also likely to see Spider, Howler, and Capuchin Monkeys as well as dozens of other species of birds. If you are lucky you might even spot an endangered West Indian Manatee.

NOTE: The entrance fee to Tortuguero National Park is not included. It is $15 USD per person.

Lunch is included at the lodge. This afternoon your guide will take you to a private nature trail where you can find wildlife, the walk is relaxed and slow as this is a flat trail. The rest of the day is at your leisure; you can relax at the swimming pool, take a cocktail admiring the river lagoon or spend the afternoon on the beach.

Day 4. Transfer Tortuguero to Puerto Viejo Beach, Caribbean Cooking Lessons.

Today after breakfast, we will meet at the main dock of the hotel to return by boat to Pavona’s dock; from there we will continue with land transportation to Guapiles town where you will have another delicious Caribbean lunch. After the meal, one of our representatives will pick you up to take you to the next destination of this expedition, Puerto Viejo Beach.

Day 5: Puerto Viejo Beach, where the jungle meets the ocean

This morning is free so you can enjoy the gold sand beaches and lush forest near the coast, you can easily walk to beaches full of coral reef to admire colorful fish and pick some shells. A good idea is to rent a bicycle and explore the many beaches around or visit the beach town of Puerto Viejo where you can find local restaurants with delicious and economic meals, bars with cheap beer, and souvenir shops.

Some of the beaches you can visit in a day are Manzanillo, Playa Grande, Uvita, Chiquita, Cocles and Playa Negra. If you want to take a good hike and see wildlife, we recommend you to visit Cahuita National Park on your own or hire a local guide.

By the end of the afternoon, you will enjoy a special cooking class with the company of an experienced Chef.  At his restaurant, you have the opportunity to learn the best secrets of a very particular and delicious cuisine.  You will learn how they use many different spices to create incredible flavors for basic dishes like “Rice n’ Beans” or the famous “Ron-don”, which is a seafood soup with coconut milk. Of course, you will enjoy the fantastic dish prepared as dinner.

Day 6: Transfer Puerto Viejo to Arenal Volcano area, Pacuare River white water rafting tour.

Early morning pick up at the hotel in Puerto Viejo Beach. Our representative will be waiting for you and take you to the area of Siquirres on the Caribbean slopes.  Once you get to Siquirres a delicious typical breakfast will be waiting for you, this is truly the best breakfast for a day full of activity.

Day 7. Arenal area, exploring the volcano’s highlights

Today you will enjoy one of the best tours around. During the day, you can visit the most interesting attractions and meet the rich rainforest. Start the day hiking across the Arenal Hanging Bridges where you can admire the jungle not only from the ground but also from the treetops. Then, visit the breathtaking “La Fortuna” waterfall before enjoying a traditional Costa Rican lunch. To finish the day, you have the chance to enjoy amazing scenery around the Arenal volcano on a leisurely walk through the National Park.

The Arenal Hanging Bridges are a beautiful, environmentally friendly project located near the Arenal Volcano. The trails span a total of 2 miles, allowing you to see the rainforest from a bird’s perspective. Your nature guide will teach you about Costa Rican culture, history, and nature while pointing out different species of plants, animals and birds along the way.

After your adventure on the hanging bridges, you will head to the La Fortuna Waterfall. There is time to put your bathing suit on if you want cool off under the waterfall. This is sure to be a good workout as there are 300 steps to get to the down to the waterfall and, of course, 300 to get back up! When you reach the bottom, you’ll have an opportunity to swim in one of the largest cool waters in the whole area. Next, you will try a delicious Costa Rican “casado” at a local restaurant, this typical Costa Rican meal is a great source of carbohydrates that you will need after climbing up the waterfall. After refueling yourself, we will take you to the Arenal Volcano National Park where your guide will take you on a nature walk. The trails are mostly flat and not very strenuous, perfect for a leisurely and informative hike with one of our experts guides. We will head through the jungle, hiking through well-groomed, easy trails that skirt around the base of the Arenal Volcano. Your eagle-eyed guide will point out different species of flora and fauna and teach you about the volcanic activity in the area.

Day 8. Transfer Arenal Volcano to Monteverde

Today you will travel to meet the inspiring Cloud Forest.  We will take you on the Van-Boat-Van across the Arenal Lake to get to Monteverde. You can enjoy spectacular views of the volcano and find different species of birds while you navigate the tranquil lake. 

Monteverde has one of the most important protected cloud forests found in the world.  There are just a few of these forests therefore it is very important to conserve the unique plants and animals found around. You will have the opportunity to explore the forest but also get to know the friendly locals who enjoy living in harmony with Mother Nature.

By mid-afternoon, we will take you to a private property where an interesting cultural activity will take place.  The main goal of this activity is to see how a real “Trapiche” works. The tour begins with a short walk through the farm where you can get a glimpse of different plantations like sugar cane, coffee, bananas, plantains, tubers, oranges and more. The entire coffee production process is explained during the second part of this activity and then you will continue with a ride on an authentic Costa Rican oxcart. Afterwards experience the process of making liquor with the sugar cane, this is the traditional drink of Costa Rica named “guaro”. To finish, delight yourself with a fragrant cup of the locally produced coffee.

Day 9. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Canopy Tour (zip line)

Today you will explore the wonderful Cloud Forest accompanied by an expert tour guide. Departure from the hotel is early so you will have more opportunities to see wildlife. Upon arrival to the reserve, your guide will choose the best trail to follow depending on the weather and the interest of the participants. The nature history walk can take between 2 to 4 hours during which you will be able to enjoy the enchanting flora and fauna of the forest.

You will hike part of the 12 Km of trails that are in this private reserve of cloud forest while your Guide explains you how animals and plants coexist on this kind of forest. If you are lucky you may spot a quetzal, a trogon or the noisy bell-bird. Return to the hotel after the informative hike.

In the afternoon, you will enjoy one of the most popular activities in Costa Rica, the zip line or Canopy Tour as it’s called locally. It consists of gliding between trees and mountains via wires and a special harness specially designed for it. While you “fly” through the dense cloud forest you can see and feel all the natural activity occurring within the treetops. Birds, insects and some other mammals are easy to see with the help of your guides. Don’t forget your camera so you can capture the amazing views of the cloud forest.

Day 10. Transfer Monteverde to Manuel Antonio beach, Jungle Crocodile Safari boat tour

Today, after breakfast, we will take you to the Central Pacific area of Costa Rica.  On the way you will get close to one of the biggest reptiles of the world. After a couple of hours on the road you will stop at “Rio Grande de Tarcoles” river where a comfortable and safe boat awaits to take you on a safari type tour.

You will have the opportunity to see magnificent reptiles that are than 4 meters in size. They have been on this planet for more than two hundred million years. Since they have not changed much over the time, they are considered living dinosaurs. You can also see iguanas and basilisks in their natural environment. You will be accompanied by a captain and a bilingual guide, both are navigation experts willing to provide all the information about the fauna and flora of the river. It is easy to take excellent photographs and videos of wildlife at close range from the boats.

Continue towards Manuel Antonio after this fun activity. Manuel Antonio is just south of Quepos on the Pacific Coast, 132 km from San José. Perhaps it is so popular because of its expansive white sand beaches that are backed by an evergreen forest that grows right up to the high tide line. The principal habitats are primary forests, secondary forests, mangrove swamps, lagoons and beach vegetation. There is quite a varied fauna with 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. The park includes 12 little islands just off the coast, these are often visited by a number of dolphins and, at times, migrating whales can be observed from the beach.

The area itself is full of luxury and high-end properties, exclusive restaurants with excellent cuisine where you can sit and admire the ocean and spectacular sunsets. Here you will find the perfect combination between Mother Nature and the best of civilization.

Day 11. Manuel Antonio National Park.

This day you will visit Manuel Antonio National Park with the company of a nature guide. Tiny it may be, but this 682-hectare national park is the epitome of everything tourists flock to Costa Rica to see.  There are stunning beaches, a magnificent setting with islands offshore (bird sanctuaries for marine species), lush rainforests laced with a network of welcoming trails and wildlife galore. You can experience close-up encounters with monkeys, sloths, coatimundis, and scarlet macaws while you hike the trails.  However, wildlife on the beach are accustomed to people.

Day 12. Transfer Manuel Antonio to San Jose.

Day 13. Departure Costa Rica.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1. Arrival to Liberia, Costa Rica – Rincon de La Vieja area

A representative will be waiting for you in the airport. He will provide you with an information package that contains your travel itinerary in detail with pick up times and contact information, vouchers for services and other important documents. Once you are ready, you will depart towards the Rincon de La Vieja mountain area that is 1 hour away. Your adventure lodge is located on the edge of the national park.  The hotel is surrounded by the tropical dry forest common of this area.

Check in at your hotel and the rest of the day is free, you can go and check the horses if you have time or you can just relax and refresh by the swimming pool. There are some trails around the property which you can explore on your own.

Day 2. Rincon de La Vieja National Park Guided tour

Your trip in the tropics will begin with the exploration of an active volcano on a captivating trail that winds throughout the dry forest.  This will be a 3-hour walk with constantly changing altitudes that will show you many different landscapes.  The “Las Pailas” section of the Rincon de La Vieja National Park is the perfect place to witness the power of an active volcano.  You will see the bubbling volcanic mud as the power liberates the underground with the energy given off from the volcano.  This power is an important source of energy for many industries.

The trail is a loop of about 3 miles.  You can find a wide variety of vegetation, primary and secondary forests that are home to beautiful mammals such as raccoons, white-nosed coatis, Central American agoutis, armadillos, white-tail deers, tapirs, and three species of monkeys. Some of the most common birds are the Blue-crowned Motmot, the Crested Guan and the Emerald Toucanet.

As you continue along the trail you will encounter many different displays of volcanic activity that will make it impossible to forget that you are in an active volcano region.  Steam and sulfur pour out of the yellow and rust-colored ground at natural fumaroles. Clay and coffee-colored pools bubble with boiling hot volcanic water.  Smooth gray volcanic mud froths and explodes upwards at the “cauldrons”.  You’ll also find beautiful little rushing rivers and small waterfalls crisscrossing the trails. 

You will return to the hotel after the hike and the rest of the day is free to enjoy the hotel facilities or take an optional tour (not included).

Day 3. Rincon de La Vieja area, Canyon zip line tour

One of the best zip lines in the country, not only because the wild scenario you will be in but also because the flight through the trees, rappel, rock climb, swing like Tarzan, and cross hanging bridges over a narrow river canyon. Your playground is the spectacular White River Canyon, formed by water erosion over millions of years.

The afternoon is free so you can visit the hotel’s natural spa and enjoy a natural treatment on your skin. You just need to cover yourself with volcanic mud, wait until it dries and then submerge yourself in the natural heated hot springs. Massages and other treatments are available for an extra cost.

Day 4.  Rincon de la Vieja – Tamarindo Beach.

Today you will be transferred to the beautiful white sand beach of Tamarindo located 1.5 hours away from Rincon de la Vieja area. The driver will pick you up around mid-morning and take you straight to the beach.  Tour hotel is a boutique property located only 5 minutes walking distance from the beach but also close to everything in town.

The afternoon is a leisure time you have to explore the beach and enjoy the warm waters of the tropical Pacific Coast. The waters are perfect for swimming and doing various water sports such as surfing or snorkeling. The beautiful sunsets of Tamarindo are a sight that you will never forget.

Day 5. Tamarindo Beach.

Leisure day to enjoy the beach and explore coasts at your own pace.  There are several shops in town that offer surfboard, bicycles, ATVs and small golf car rentals so you can explore the nearby beaches and towns. The white sand beach is also waiting for you.  Enjoy a long walk and explore the beautiful Langosta beach south of Tamarindo or you can walk in the other direction and get to “Playa Grande” after crossing the Tamarindo estuary with the help of a taxi-boat. 

Once a quiet fishing town, Tamarindo is now the area’s most developed and accessible tourist town.  Located in the central west coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Tamarindo offers visitors of every budget a chance to experience the region’s unspoiled beaches and incredible biodiversity.  Despite the town’s recent and ongoing development, it retains the laid back vibe that is so characteristic of the region.

Day 6. Tamarindo Beach, Sunset Sailing tour

In the afternoon you will enjoy the best adventure available in the area, a Sunset Sailing tour on a 66-foot modern catamaran. The boat expedition departs right from the beach therefore you can walk to the meeting point.

Once on board the catamaran, a crewmember will give an introductory speech to explain the tour and you will begin sailing to one of the most pristine beaches in the area.  En route to the secluded beach be on the look-out for turtles, dolphins, flying fish, or whales.

Snorkel equipment is provided so you can admire the colorful rocky reefs and look for exotic sea life. Some of the more common animals seen include tangs, puffers, porcupine fish, eels, starfish, sting rays and seahorses.  While you enjoy the bay, the crew will be preparing a light lunch. Following lunch, the anchor is pulled back up, the sails are raised, and we will start navigating among the bay.  You will arrive to the final anchor location as the sun nears the horizon and the sky melts in thousands of colors (the tour is also available in the morning).

Return to the hotel after this exciting activity and the rest of the day is free.

Day 7: Depart Costa Rica

Today you will say good-bye to the beautiful Costa Rica and its people for it is time to travel back home and reunite with family and friends. One of our drivers will pick you up at the hotel and take you straight to LIR International Airport, located just 1 hour from the hotel. In Costa Rica you must be at the airport 3 hours prior the departure time.
