DAY 2: KLONGS AND CHINA TOWN TOUR / GRAND PALACE & WAT PO

Travel by motor launch on the picturesque Chao Phraya River and canals, or klongs, to observe the serene family homes and temples along the waterways. You will pass the famous Royal Barges, excellent samples of Thai craftsmanship and stop at Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. Then visit Grand Palace, the former residence for the Thai kings. Visit the Reception Hall, the Coronation Hall, the Funeral Hall and the beautiful Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Phra Keo. Visit Wat Po, one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok. Ride on a tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled taxi, to Chinatown for a short walk. (BL)

DAY 4: BANGKOK /CHIANG RAI

Morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Chiang Rai where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 5: GOLDEN TRIANGLE EXCURSION

Visit the Golden Triangle (its sights and scenes present images of a traditional way of life unknown in the western world) followed by boat ride on the Mekong River to see activities along the border of Laos. Stop at Donsao Island on to visit the local market selling local handicrafts. (BL)

DAY 6: CHIANG RAI / CHIANG MAI

Morning drive to Chiang Mai with stop at hot springs en route. Upon arrival visit Wat Suan Dok where the ashes of Chiang Mai’s Royal Families are interred. Proceed to Wat Jet Yod with its seven spires and incredible architecture commemorating the year 2000 of the Buddha era. Then drive up Doi Suthep to visit Wat Phra Dhat Doi Suthep (built in A.D. 1384). Wat Doi Suthep is the most sacred temple in northern Thailand, containing a holy relic of Lord Buddha.

DAY 7: MORNING MARKET / HILL TRIBES / HANDICRAFT VILLAGE

Early this morning leave your hotel for Tapae Gate to witness the traditional Thai culture of offering food to Buddhist monks. Take a rickshaw ride to Chiang Mai Gate to visit the morning market. Continue to WatSrisoda at the foot of DoiSuthep where you can see the Buddhist monks have their morning prayers. Following breakfast, visit the jungle area to experience the hill tribe village of Yao, Akha, and Longneck to see their way of life. In the afternoon, visit a handicraft village to see the manufacturing of lacquerware, the weaving of Thai silk, paper umbrella making, woodcarving, silverware-making and more delightful arts. This evening, feast at a Khantoke dinner with authentic traditional performances featuring regional tribes.

DAY 3: COOKING CLASS AT BLUE ELEPHANT COOKING SCHOOL

Enjoy the Ancient Thai Cuisine Cooking Course, ideal for both amateurs and professionals. You will learn how to make four of the country’s long forgotten dishes including Ma Auan, Kaeng Mumba, Lon Taujiew Poo as well as a variety of delicacies, that were quite popular in the old days. You will be given some tips about alternative cooking methods and substitutes throughout the demonstrations. You will cook each dish and teachers will be on hand to help and guide you with step-by-step instructions. Afternoon free at leisure.

DAY 4: MAEKLONG RAILWAY MARKET & FLOATING MARKET`

Early morning leave Bangkok for Samut Songkhram province. Visit to the rural Maeklong Railway Market. The nickname of the market, Talad Rom Hoop, roughly translates to closing an umbrella. As the name Maeklong Railway Market suggests, part of the market is situated on the railway. Every morning till late in the evening, this market springs to life selling a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, snacks, and clothes and accessories. However, what makes the market unique and exciting is the fact that a train will run through the market 8 times a day, every day of the week. As soon as the siren signals the arrival of the train, everything stops. This morning enjoy a tour that introduces you to Bangkok, the “City of Angels”. Drive through Chinatown packed with hundreds of market stalls, street-side restaurants, and gold shops. On to colorful “Little India” with its bright hanging walls of glistening fabrics and the fragrant wholesale Flower Market. Visit serene Wat Po, (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) the oldest and largest temple in the city, with its astonishing giant Reclining Buddha, over 150 feet long and almost 40 feet high. Drive via Royal Avenue where most of the Government offices are located and the King’s Palace. The rest of the day is at leisure before tonight’s Welcome Drink and briefing by your Tour Manager, followed by a Welcome Dinner at the hotel

DAY 4, Thursday – Full Day in Bangkok

Today is yours to explore Bangkok independently. Or, take the optional tour to the elaborate 18th century Grand Palace, symbol and ceremonial heart of the kingdom, and to Wat Phra Kaew, (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), with its brightly colored buildings, golden spires and gorgeous mosaics. You’ll see the distinct contrast in style between the Thai-inspired Wat Phra Kaew and the European design of the Grand Palace. In the evening, attend the optional buffet dinner and stunning performance of the “Journey to the Enchanted Kingdom of Siam”. DAY 5, Friday – Travel to Kanchanaburi, Visit Bridge over River Kwai & War Museum

Travel southwest this morning to the vibrant Damnoen Saduak Floating Market; observe how the ancient trading of wares is conducted between hundreds of local farmers and villagers aboard small Sampan boats. The boats are fully loaded with all kinds of products including fruits, vegetables, dry goods, and freshly cooked food. From the Floating market, continue to the quiet provincial capital of Kanchanaburi, with its stunning natural beauty, spectacular waterfalls, and beautiful rivers. Walk over the stone bridge at the River Kwai, one of the most famous rivers in the world, which gained international fame in the book and film, “Bridge on the River Kwai”. The bridge, several museums, and cemeteries have respectfully preserved the history and memorialized the dead. Tonight, enjoy dinner at a hotel restaurant

DAY 6, Saturday – Full Day in Kanchanaburi

Today is at leisure to explore Kanchanaburi independently. Or, take the optional full day Hellfire Pass and Death Railway tour. Hellfire Pass derives its name from Allied POWs forced to work day and night in the jungle to complete the bridge and rail line using only simple tools; more than 12,000 soldiers and 80,000 Thais perished during the construction. DAY 7, Sunday – Travel to Ayutthaya, Ayutthaya City Tour

Depart Kanchanaburi to Ayutthaya, the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai for over 400 years, once glorified as the largest city in Southeast Asia. In the center of the city lies Ayutthaya Historical Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can see the ruins of the former capital and its remaining palaces, monasteries, and towers – one can envision the grandeur and splendor that was once the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. After lunch, continue to the Chai Wattanaram Temple, built by King Prasat Tong, a commoner who overthrew the previous king and took his throne. Here, you can enjoy the peaceful and tranquil surroundings of Siam before dinner

DAY 8, Monday – Travel to Pattaya

Start your morning with a visit to Bang Pa-In Palace, a collection of beautiful buildings in various architectural styles, surrounded by a lake. Continue to Pattaya, a seaside resort on the East Coast of the Gulf of Thailand, with its beautiful beaches and sparkling azure waters. En route stop at a gem gallery to watch jewelry being made and learn more about the gems used. Arrive at the hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure
