A celebration of America’s motoring past awaits you on this half-day visit and will see you travel around Havana’s historical city escape in a vintage car, built in the USA in the 1950’s. Your classic vehicle may bear the name of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Cadillac or such like, and your first port of call will be for a Cuban cocktail before continuing on down the seafront Malecón boulevard and Quinta Avenida. A historical photo stop then follows at Plaza de la Revolución, after which you’ll visit the 19th-century Christopher Columbus Cemetery. Steeped in the past, the park-like place boasts more than 500 mausoleums, family vaults, chapels and galleries. The fine art of making cigars and rum is an integral part of Cuban culture that this visit will acquaint you with, starting with a coach transfer to one of the island’s cigar factories. The guided visit will see you watch highly-skilled torcedors as they hand-roll the best Cuban cigars, called Habanos, with nimble fingers. Next up is a drive down Avenida de los Presidentes to pass by San Gerónimo University, then travel along Avenida 23 en route to the historic Plaza de la Revolución, where you’ll have time to take photos. Moving on again, you’ll head for Hotel Nacional de Cuba via the Museum of the Revolution, the harbor-front boulevard and Plaza San Francisco de Asís. Your second culture-centric stop then follows at the Havana Club Museum to find out how freshly cut sugarcane is distilled into rum – a truly Cuban experience. As a final highlight, you’ll be able to enjoy a taste of the finished product. Some free time will then be yours to browse for a memento and take more photos before you return to the ship. Make a date with the stylish Habana Café, a venue that recreates the feel of the 1950s with meticulous attention to detail and is the highlight of this night-time visit. A guided coach ride will first see you reach the establishment, which forms part of the 5-star Meliá Cohiba Hotel, in which you can then relive a historical era and watch a show featuring great Cuban performers. This brush with the best of Cuban culture will be accompanied by a refreshing drink and will give you a chance to take part in local customs by dancing to Cuban rhythms once the show is over. With night-time views of the seafront Malecón Boulevard to enjoy as you go, a brief coach ride will then return you to the ship. 4. A NIGHT AT THE TROPICANA CABARET (CUB12B)

This very special evening visit will first see you board a coach in the company of a guide for the brief transfer to the world-renown Tropicana Club, an establishment founded in 1939 in Havana’s Marianao suburb. As the island’s largest nightclub, the venue counts as an iconic celebration of Cuban culture, featuring dancing girls wearing scanty costumes and feathered headgear, Cuban rhythms and tropical surroundings – all played out under a velvety night sky. A live orchestra provides the musical backdrop to some 200 performers, whose only remit is to provide a fascinating insight into the things Cubans love most: music, dancing and Havana Club rum, of which you’ll be served a ¼ bottle with a suitable mixer to sip during the show. This totally immersive look at Cuban life comes to a close with your return to the ship. Please note: the night-time visit departs at approx. 20:00 hours, but the precise time must be confirmed during your cruise. Havana’s vibrant culture is up for exploration on this appealing half-day visit, which showcases some of the city’s folkloric aspects. You’ll first enjoy drive-by views of historically significant architecture, passing Parque Central – a large palm-fringed square – as well as Plaza de la Revolución and the José Martí Memorial, a 109 m tower that commemorates a Cuban national hero. Next up, you’ll visit the Communitarian Project at the open-air Almacenes de San José handicraft market in the port of Havana. Apart from leather wares such as handbags, wallets, shoes and belts, you’ll also find ceramics, masks and papier-mâché ornaments that bear testament to Cuban folklore and creativity. 6. DISCOVER HAVANA & THE LA CABAÑA FORTRESS (CUB31A)

Spend a few hours off the ship taking a history-centric look around the third-largest fortress complex in the Americas, the 18th-century Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. Known locally simply as La Cabaña, the historic fortress sits high up on the eastern side of Havana’s harbor entrance near the 16th-century Morro Castle. Enjoy a guided visit of the complex and learn about its storied past, pay a visit to the on-site museum and, if you feel so inclined, take time to interact with local artisans. After the visit, you’ll have a brief stop at the Christ of Havana statue, which stands 20 m tall, is made entirely of Carrara marble and overlooks the Bay of Havana. Its construction took 67 blocks of marble that were imported directly from Italy after receiving a blessing from Pope Pius XII. Last up, the drive back to the port and your ship will take you past the lovely Malecón, an architecturally significant waterfront esplanade of some 8 km in length. Havana is home to a variety of architectural styles, a selection of which this half-day visit intends to showcase. A guided walk through Havana’s historical quarter will see you cross its four main squares, pass the Lonja del Comercio (the old stock exchange), the Minor Basilica of San Francisco de Asís, Palacio de la Capitanes Generales, Palacio del Segundo Cabo and the Castle of the Royal Force. After a coach-based look at Paseo del Prado, Parque Central, National Capitol, the Grand Theatre and the Telégrafo, Inglaterra and Manzana Kempinski hotels, you’ll take Calle 23, a.k.a. La Rampa, to reach the modern Vedado district, home to the reinforced concrete El Focsa skyscraper, the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the iconic Coppelia ice cream parlour and the University of Havana. A scenic 80-km drive will then see you reach the Rosario Mountains and your first stop, a lakeside restaurant called Rancho Curujey. Enjoy a drink to a backdrop of superb mountain views, then find out about the Las Terrazas Social Project before visiting some key locations of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. See how local Cubans live in the Las Terrazas community at Plaza de la Comunidad, learn about the health system, green medicine and other remedies from the doctor at the medical center, honour the community’s ancestors at the House of Memory and interact with local artists at their studios during your visit. Located at the western end of the island in the Artemisa Province, the UNESCO biosphere reserve is your destination for this full day off the ship. 9.CUBAN ART AND & CULTURAL DISCOVERY (CUB36)

Art meets culture meets socio-political comment on this day-long visit that will see you touch base with several key community projects. Start with a coach transfer to the Lawton district and Muraleando, a project founded by Cuban artists in 2001 that uses disused urban sites to showcase murales art. An example is a water tank turned art gallery that offers lessons for children and boasts its own “Tank” cocktail, made to a secret recipe. This enjoyable full-day tour in Havana and its surrounding areas enables you to get in touch with some of the local projects affecting Cuban life. A first stop will be in Lawton district, about 10 km from the city center, to visit the “Muraleando” community project, founded in 2001 by a group of Cuban artists. Learn about the art of murales and discover how abandoned places were turned into art places; one of them is a tank, used to conserve water, and now become a large art gallery and classroom to teach children ceramic, plastic arts, dance, choir and guitar. A unique cocktail, “the Tank”, made with a secret recipe, comes from this place too. A short stop at Plaza de la Revolución will inform you of its historical importance, followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Leaving this district behind, reach Plaza la Revolución for a short stop and learn a little of Cuban history and the importance of the site for all Cuban people. A stop in a typical restaurant follows to enjoy a Cuban lunch. Moving on, enjoy views of Havana landmarks en route to Fusterlandia. Created by the internationally acclaimed artist, José Fuster, the community project features sculptures and mosaics. Walk around, take photos and perhaps find a memento. To round off the visit, you can sip a cocktail to a backdrop of fabulous vistas and savour a drive-by look at the Malecón esplanade, Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital and Havana’s historical quarter. The second leg of the excursion including a sightseeing coach drive to discover some of Havana main monuments until you reach the community project Fusterlandia, another of the projects dedicated to plastic arts especially mosaics, created by Fuster, an internationally recognized artist.
